Where volume drives the outcome

Surfing: volume beats length

Surfboards used to be described by length alone, which told you almost nothing — a 6'2" board can be 26 litres or 38 depending on its width, thickness and outline. Volume in litres is the meaningful number, and matching it to your body weight and ability is the single biggest factor in whether a board works for you.

Car audio: the box is half the speaker

A subwoofer's response depends as much on its enclosure as the driver itself. Sealed boxes give tight, accurate bass; ported boxes are louder at the tuning frequency but roll off sharply below it. Manufacturers publish a recommended internal volume for each driver, and hitting it — after subtracting what the driver, port and bracing displace — is what separates a clean install from a boomy one.

Shipping: volume can outweigh weight

Carriers bill on whichever is greater, actual weight or dimensional weight derived from the parcel's volume. Ship something light and bulky — pillows, lampshades, packing foam — and you pay for space rather than mass. Knowing your dimensional weight before you book is how you avoid an unpleasant invoice.
