Quick answer: litres ≈ your weight in kg × an ability coefficient. Roughly 0.9–1.1 for beginners, 0.6–0.8 intermediate, 0.4–0.5 advanced, 0.33–0.40 expert. An 80 kg intermediate lands around 48–64 litres. Treat it as a starting point, then adjust for fitness, age and the waves you actually surf.

Two things jump out of that table. First, the range across ability at a given weight is enormous — an 80 kg surfer might ride anywhere from 29 to 80 litres. Second, beginners need roughly double what experts ride, which is why learning on a friend's shortboard is so miserable.

Which ability band are you actually in?

Most surfers overestimate here, and it costs them waves. Be honest:

Adjust up 5–10% if you are over 40, unfit, surfing infrequently, riding small or weak waves, or returning after a layoff. Adjust down if you are unusually fit, surf several times a week, or ride powerful, steep waves where a thinner board holds better.

The most common mistake in surfboard buying is not being too generous with volume — it is being too stingy. A board with slightly too much volume catches more waves and is more fun; a board with too little just leaves you paddling.

Estimating a board's volume from its dimensions

If a board has no volume printed on it — older boards often don't — you can approximate:

The 0.0164 converts cubic inches to litres. The fullness factor accounts for the fact that a board is not a rectangular block: it tapers toward nose and tail and its rails are rounded. Typical values:

Worked example — a 6'0" × 19" × 2.5" everyday shortboard: 72 × 19 × 2.5 = 3,420 in³ × 0.0164 = 56.1 litres × 0.55 ≈ 30.8 litres, which is right where a board like that usually measures.

Treat this as an estimate only. Real volume comes from the shaper's design file, which accounts for the exact rocker, rail and concave. Two boards with identical outside dimensions can differ by several litres.

Common mistakes & pro tips

  • Overrating your ability. The most expensive mistake in surfboard buying. If you are unsure between two bands, take the higher volume.
  • Chasing a length. "I ride a 6'2"" means very little — a 6'2" can be 26 or 38 litres. Volume is the meaningful number; length is almost decorative by comparison.
  • Ignoring your own weight change. A 10 kg change moves your ideal volume by 6–11 litres. Boards that stopped working often stopped fitting.
  • Forgetting the wetsuit. A thick winter suit adds buoyancy but also drag and restricted paddling. Most surfers go slightly up in volume for cold-water seasons.
  • Pro tip — buy in the middle, then adjust. Take the mid-range figure for your first board in a new category, surf it for a season, and let experience tell you which way to move.
  • Pro tip — check the printed number. Most boards made in the last decade have the volume printed near the tail or on the stringer. Use that in preference to any estimate.

Should I ride more volume as I get older?

Most surfers do, and it is sensible. Paddle fitness and shoulder strength decline before technique does, so adding 5 to 10 percent volume keeps wave count up without changing how the board rides. The same applies if you surf infrequently or are returning after a break.

Can I calculate volume from board dimensions?

Only as an estimate. Multiplying length × width × thickness in inches and converting gives the volume of a rectangular block, so it must be scaled by a fullness factor of roughly 0.5 to 0.6 depending on the outline and rail shape. A 6'0" × 19" × 2.5" shortboard estimates to about 31 litres this way, which is close to typical. For an exact figure, ask the shaper.

Does wave size change the volume I need?

Yes. Small, weak waves reward extra volume because paddle speed and glide matter most. Powerful, steep waves reward less, since a thinner board sits deeper, holds a rail and duck dives more easily. Many surfers keep a step-up board with slightly less volume than their everyday shortboard for bigger days.
