Volume vs Capacity: What's the Difference?

In one sentence: volume is how much space an object takes up; capacity is how much a container can hold. A solid steel ball has volume but no capacity. A bottle has both — and its capacity is always a little less than its external volume, because the walls occupy space too.

The two definitions

Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by any object, solid or hollow. It is measured in cubic units — cubic centimetres, cubic metres, cubic feet. Every object has a volume, even a solid rock.

Capacity is the amount of substance — usually liquid — that a hollow container can hold. It is measured in litres, millilitres, gallons or pints. Only containers have a capacity; a solid object does not.

Why they use different units for the same thing

Here is the subtlety students find confusing: capacity is a volume. The space inside a bottle is just as three-dimensional as the glass around it. The reason we use different units is historical and practical — it is easier to say a jug holds "2 litres" than "2,000 cubic centimetres," even though they are identical.

The wall-thickness gap

For any real container, internal capacity is always slightly less than external volume, because the walls have thickness. A fish tank measured on the outside as 60 × 30 × 30 cm has an external volume of 54 litres, but with 1 cm glass its true water capacity is closer to 58 × 28 × 29 cm ≈ 47 litres. The thicker the walls, the wider the gap — which is why serious aquarium and tank calculations always use internal dimensions.

When the distinction matters

  • Exams. Maths and science papers often mark the difference explicitly — use cubic units for volume, litres for capacity.
  • Shipping. A parcel's external volume decides its volumetric weight and shipping cost; its internal capacity decides what fits inside.
  • Tanks and vessels. Engineers quote "nominal capacity" (usable) separately from geometric volume, allowing for walls, fittings and a headspace that is never filled.
